What are Trump's chances of winning the 2024 US Presidential Election?

Donald Trump has yet to officially announce his 2024 presidential bid, but he is considered the frontrunner for the Republican nomination if he decides to run. Trump retains a devoted base of supporters, but his chances in the general election face significant obstacles.

Trump would need to rebuild support among independent voters and suburban voters, groups that strongly favored Biden in 2020. Trump's continued false claims about the 2020 election being stolen have alienated some voters. Additionally, the January 6th committee hearings have reinforced negative perceptions of Trump among swing voters. Trump also faces resistance among Republican party leaders and donors who blame him for the party's loss of the House, Senate and White House under his watch. However, early head-to-head polls show Trump competitive against Biden in a hypothetical 2024 match-up. Biden suffers from low approval ratings at this stage. If inflation and the economy continue to struggle, Biden could be very vulnerable. Trump is a talented campaigner who effectively taps into grievances among the Republican base. He could recalibrate his message for a general election.Ultimately, Trump remains the most dominant personality in the Republican party. If he runs, he will be tough to beat in a GOP primary. But the 2020 election showed the difficulties Trump could face trying to rebuild the wide coalition needed to retake the White House. His chances would greatly depend on the political environment in 2024 and the Democratic opponent.
